The girls soccer team kept their season alive defeating Austin Anderson, 1-0, in the Area Championships on March 29. They lost in overtime to Austin Anderson a year ago in the Area round. The team’s lone goal was scored late in the second half by freshman Krisslyn Boyles after a corner kick. The girls soccer team defeated College Station on penalty kicks in the bi-district championship on March 24. The first-round playoff game was tied at 1 after 100 minutes of play. Junior Emma Yeager scored the team’s only goal in the 71st minute. Freshman Courtney Daniel was in goal as the Panthers sank three penalty kicks and College Station finished with only two. Yeager hit the first penalty kick for Kingwood Park and juniors Nadia Lawrence and Bailey Ricker added the other two. Emma Yeager wonders what being normal even means. 

To the sophomore, normal is missing sleepovers and parties for soccer practices and games. Normal is scoring goals around the country as one of the best 16-year-old forwards in the region. Normal is sometimes taping your torn shoes together and moving multiple times because layoffs during COVID hit too close to home.

“You are not normal,” Kim Yeager tells her daughter Emma regularly. “Don’t wish that you were normal. You’ve never been normal. You’ll never get to be normal. You’re exceptional. And one of these days you are going to look back and think, ‘My youth was the best because I wasn’t normal.’”

Former players returned to challenge this year’s team in a preseason scrimmage. The current players won 3-0 in the annual game. The two teams then gathered for pizza afterward.

When senior Emma Yeager saw the bright green soccer field cake sitting on her kitchen table, she immediately turned to her mom Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s going to be real awkward if I don’t score tonight,” Emma told her mom, Kim Yeager. “What are we doing with it?”

Her mom had a ready answer although it was clear she had confidence in Emma’s ability to break a tie atop the girls soccer team’s all-time scoring list.
